Meet Idongesit Usua
My name is Idongesit Usua, and I am excited to run for the Board of Directors. Being an international student in Nigeria, into a General Bachelor of Arts at a Canadian higher learning institution has grown me greatly appreciative of diverse perspectives, collaboration, and leadership.
My application to contest this position is rooted in a firm commitment to the cause of advocacy, representation, and bringing about effective change. I am an advocate of decision-making with a sense of inclusivity, making sure all opinions are considered. My life’s journey across various cultural and academic backgrounds has taught me to be resilient, problem-solve, and work well with others, building relationships in the community.
I am committed to working, if elected, for openness, accountability, and new ideas that benefit our community. I am excited about the possibility of contributing to the growth and success of our organization by bringing new insights and bridging gaps.
As an international student from Nigeria and studying in Canada, I possess a broad, multidisciplinary education that features critical thinking and problem analysis to effective communication.
My academic background has exposed me to a number of viewpoints, through which I have developed flexibility and cultural awareness—vital components for traversing various contexts; for instance, using my critical thinking abilities, I examined the unique problems that students experienced, including adjustment to new teaching styles, comprehension of academic objectives, and overcoming language hurdles. I then developed practical solutions in collaboration with students and teachers, such as undertaking peer mentoring programs, volunteer programs, and cultural exchange activities.
My understanding of culture and ability to adapt facilitated my working with students from different walks of life in ensuring the project was inclusive, addressing the needs of different student groups. These were effectively articulated for both the students and staff, hence the establishment of programs that ensured an improved foreign student experience.
Additionally, my international student experience improved my resilience and problem-solving skills since I was able to successfully adapt to a new educational system and cultural environment. The ability to integrate knowledge, work together, and discuss topics of relevance has been developed through my studies, research, and extracurricular activities. Together with these skills, lifelong learning and an international perspective have prepared me for successful contributions in my job position.
This will offer me an opportunity to create an inclusive, supportive, and enabling environment wherein all students are respected, heard, and represented. In my opinion, increased student involvement will be translated into better access to resources and a sense of community helpful in academic, social, and personal development.
