How do I pick up my U-Pass?

Visit the LUSU Office from Monday to Friday between 9 AM and 4 PM and bring your student ID. We cannot provide a U-Pass to anyone who is not present, in person, with their student ID.

Full-time undergraduate students, remember to confirm that you’ve been charged the U-Pass fee in your tuition.

  1. Log in to MyInfo.
  2. Select: Student > My Financial Profile (not Financial Aid) > My Statement of Account > Current Year.
  3. Check if you were charged for the “LUSU Student Bus Pass” (or similar) that matches the current annual U-Pass fee.

Have this information ready in case we have not received your up-to-date enrollment details from the university.

Part-time students, graduate students, or any other students who have not been automatically charged the U-Pass fee in their tuition can purchase it at the LUSU office. We accept cash and e-Transfer. The U-Pass fee cannot be added to your tuition if you have not been automatically enrolled.

 What You Need to Know

Starting Fall 2025, Orillia students will continue to receive a Universal Bus Pass (U-Pass) that gives unlimited access to Orillia Transit year-round.

How To Apply To Opt Out

Starting Fall 2025 up to 15% of students who are automatically billed for the U-Pass and meet eligibility requirements may be approved. Due to this cap, space is limited, and approvals are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Orillia U-Pass Opt-Out FAQ
What’s new about the Orillia U-Pass starting in September 2025?

For the first time ever, eligible students can apply to opt out — but only if they meet very specific conditions (see below).

Can I opt out of the U-Pass?

Maybe. You may apply to opt out if all of the following eligibility criteria are met, and you can provide supporting documentation:

  • Your current residence while attending school is outside the Orillia Transit Service Area; and
  • You have purchased an 8-month parking pass (September to April) from either:
    1. Lakehead University, or
    2. City of Orillia; and
  • Have not been issued (picked up) your U-Pass for the current academic year.

Each year, up to 15% of students who are automatically billed for the U-Pass and meet eligibility requirements may be approved. Due to this cap, space is limited, and approvals are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are strongly encouraged to submit complete applications as early as possible to be considered.

How will I be refunded?

If approved, a refund cheque in the student’s name will be issued to the address provided in the opt-out application within 8 to 10 weeks after the opt-out period closes.

What is considered the Orillia Transit Service Area?

Orillia Transit Service Area means the City limits boundary including Orillia Square Mall.

Are there any restrictions on where I can live and still apply to opt out?

Yes. Your current address must be outside the Orillia Transit Service Area but still reflect a realistic daily commute to campus. If your address is more than 250km from Orilllia, you may be requested to provide additional proof that you are commuting from that location. Addresses outside of Ontario or outside of Canada will not be accepted under any circumstances.

Can I opt-out if I am a student living outside the Orillia Transit Service Area but all (100%) my classes are online?

If you are taking all classes online you may qualify for a fee removal as long as you submit your request before September 30. You will need to show proof all your classes are online by submitting your full course schedule. Apply for a fee removal by emailing orillia@lusu.ca before September 30.

Why can’t everyone opt out?

The U-Pass works because everyone chips in to keep it affordable and sustainable — it’s a group discount. If everyone could opt out, the program would collapse. This would raise costs for students who rely on transit and risk ending the U-Pass altogether. That’s why the new opt-out option is limited and carefully targeted to student drivers who most need an opt-out.

What if I live in Barrie or outside Orillia but don’t drive?

Unfortunately, only students who also have 8-month parking passes can apply to opt out. We recognize this isn’t perfect, but it’s a first step that keeps the program fair and functional while responding to the needs of commuting students.

When and how do I apply to opt out?

Applications open September 1 each year and the deadline to apply is September 30. You’ll need to submit proof of your address and your parking permit.

What is accepted as proof of address?

The following can be used to show proof of address while at school:

  • Utility bill (hydro, water, internet, phone, etc.)
  • Bank or credit card statement
  • Lease or rental agreement
  • Letter from your landlord confirming residence and address (must include landlord’s name and contact information)

What is not accepted as proof of address?

The following cannot be used to show proof of address while at school:

  • Driver’s license
  • School account information or letters (e.g., from myInfo)
  • Health card
  • Documents with your name and address that is not dated
  • Any document dated more than 60 days old
