Orillia Food Resource Collective

Hello, all students are welcome here! We're here to break down the stigma that surrounds accessing emergency food resources on campus by creating a welcoming environment.

WHAT IS THE FOOD RESOURCE COLLECTIVE?

Over the years, Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) has introduced more food support in Orillia. In 2011 we began offering the grocery gift cards service. In 2021, we introduced the Good Food Box and Fresh Market, and in 2022 we were able to acquire space for The Pantry.

The aim of The Food Resource Collective is to break down the stigma that surrounds accessing emergency food resources on campus by creating a welcoming environment for students.

The Food Resource Collective includes three sub-divisions: The Pantry, The Fresh Market and The Good Food Box.

THE PANTRY
A safe, stigma-free environment that provides students with culturally-diverse, nutritional, dietary accommodating foods. Including both non-perishables and fresh options. Students can access The Pantry in person by visiting the LUSU office, and virtually (grocery card) by
Signing Up Online

THE FRESH MARKET
The Fresh Market runs once a month during the academic term and will offer free fruits and veggies in the Simcoe Hall Learning Commons.

THE GOOD FOOD BOX
Runs once per month during the academic term and provides a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables at wholesale prices. To purchase a box, complete the
Online Order Form  and submit payment in the LUSU Office. View Good Food Box Calendar

The importance of addressing food insecurity

Although it is important to have emergency resources available (such as The Pantry) we must also move beyond charitable approaches and advocate for larger change, which is why we have three levels of support:

Advocacy

We seek to address the current problems in the university food system and advocate for accessible, affordable, culturally-diverse, nutritious and sustainable foods on campus. We will bring awareness to larger issues tied to food insecurity.

Student Engagement &

Community Response

We empower students to get involved through educational workshops, volunteer, and leadership opportunities. And by offering programs such as the People’s Potato (free meals throughout the year) and the Good Food Box.

Emergency Food Response

The Food Resource Collective provides emergency food support through The
Pantry.
