What Is Food insecurity?

Food insecurity can be defined as inability to access nutritional, culturally and socially appropriate food, which can be due to lack of affordability or inability to access it due to isolation.

There are also varying levels of food insecurity from marginal, moderate to severe.

Effects and Impacts of Food Insecurity:

  • Negative impacts to student's academic performance, social life, and quality of life  .

  • Inability to eat balanced, healthy meals .

  • Negative mental health impacts (increased risk of depression, anxiety, and mood disorders)  .

  • Increased risk of chronic health conditions (diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, etc.)

We are proud to provide food resources and support to all Lakehead students who find themselves in need. We believe in reducing the economic barriers that many prevent some of our most vulnerable members from pursuing academic excellence. As your student union we also advocate for healthy choices on campus as well as raise awareness on student food insecurity. We also offer additional food programs, campaigns and services throughout the year, providing you great way to volunteer, get involved and give back to the student community.
