Part-Time Jobs

Whether you're looking to get involved in running events or assisting with LUSU's campaigns in Orillia, LUSU has a number of part-time positions available for students. Part-time hours offer the flexibility of working around your hectic class schedule, while giving you a great learning experience and an awesome resume item.

Campaigns Commissioner

The Campaigns Commissioner works with the Vice-President Orillia to coordinate campaigns work of the student union. This includes facilitating meetings of the student-run campaigns committee, doing background research on issues relating to LUSU campaigns, and organizing campaign-related events such as teach-ins, movie showings, rallies, sit-ins, and other actions. The Campaigns Commissioner will have valued input into what kind of campaigns work is pursued and what tactics will be used in the course of those campaigns.

Events Commissioner

The Events Commissioner works with the Vice-President Orillia to coordinate a range of events put on by the student union. This includes holding meetings, planning events, making arrangements, facilitating events, advertising events and engaging with students. The Events Commissioner will play a role in choosing what events will take place in the year and when.

Poll Clerk

Poll clerks assist in running the annual LUSU elections in January-February. Primary duties are to set up and staff polling booths, engage and assist students in voting, and otherwise assist the Chief Returning Officer as needed.

Chief Returning Officer

The Chief Returning Officer (CRO) coordinates LUSU’s elections. The CRO is responsible for planning for the smooth operation of the elections and recruiting students to fill Poll Clerk positions over the fall term, and overseeing the LUSU elections in January-February. This includes supervising the elections team of Deputy Returning Officers (DROs) and Poll Clerks, organizing candidates’ debates, handling complaints and violations during the campaign period, ensuring smooth voting days, conducting ballot counting with the Elections Committee, and producing a final elections report. The CRO may also be called upon to administer a limited number of LUSU club elections.

Elections Committee Member/Deputy Returning Officer

The members of the Elections Committee and the Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) assists the Chief Returning Officer (CRO) in running the LUSU elections. Duties include elections planning and recruiting students to fill Poll Clerk positions in the fall term, assisting the CRO with complaints and violations during the campaign period, supervising Poll Clerks and ensuring smooth operations of polling stations on voting days. The DRO also assists with ballot counting after the elections.

Elected Positions

If you're passionate about the issues that matter the most to students and are ready to lead the charge towards improving student life and postsecondary education, LUSU offers several opportunites for you to do just that. Elected by popular vote every year, LUSU's Executives set the direction of the student union and make sure it works in the best interests of students.

President

The LUSU President is the Chief Executive of the student union, serving as the voice of students to Lakehead University, the community, and government. The President is responsible for the general oversight and strategic direction of the corporation. They lead LUSU’s campaigns and advocacy work, are in charge of coordinating LUSU’s communications strategy, and serve as the union’s primary liason with media.

Vice-President Operations & Finance

The VP Operations & Finance is LUSU’s Treasurer, responsible for overseeing the corporation’s multi-million dollar budget, investment portfolio, businesses (The Outpost and The Study), and services (Universal Bus Pass, Health & Dental Plan, Handbook). The VP Operations & Finance also works with LUSU’s General Manager and other senior managers to oversee the student union's internal practices.

Vice-President Advocacy

LUSU’s VP Advocacy spearheads student life, and is in charge of academic advocacy at the individual and policy levels. They serve as the main support for students with academic grievances, and are the LUSU liaison to the Lakehead Senate, the body responsible for the university’s academic policies. The VP Advocacy oversees LUSU’s student centres and events programming, including Orientation and Winter Carnival, and is the primary support for student clubs organized through the student union.

Vice-President Orillia

LUSU’s VP Orillia is in charge of the corporation's operations in Orillia. The position is the Orillia equivalent of a hybrid between the VP Advocacy and President, putting them in charge of Orillia's student life and advocacy, as well as leading campaigns and community relations at LU's Southern Ontario campus.
