Meet Yamandeep Malhi

My name is Yamandeep Malhi, and I am a second-year law student in the JD program at the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law. For over six years, I have been actively involved with LUSU in various roles, advocating for students and working to create a better campus experience.

I enjoy meeting new students and helping however I can. Seeing what we can achieve when we come together drives my passion for the student movement. I’m running because I believe in speaking up and leading when it matters most—whether that’s ensuring student concerns are addressed, challenging decisions that don’t reflect our needs, or representing students at the highest levels of decision-making.

To me, leadership is about uniting students and working together to create meaningful change. When we stand together, we can accomplish much more.

I have been involved with LUSU for over 6 years in different roles, including VP Finance, interim President, Board of Directors and several committees. I am currently a member of the LUSU Board of Directors and serving as the VP Finance of the Law Students’ Society.

As the former VP Finance of LUSU, I accomplished various goals listed in my previous campaign. Notably, I revamped the Outpost, making it more inviting with improvements to the bar and technology, leading to increased returns. I also oversaw renovations to LUSU offices, reopened the Bike Shack, and introduced a budget-friendly summer-long BBQ service, along with establishing a new food and coffee spot at the Law School building.

My experience advocating for students, both within LUSU and through my role in law school, has strengthened my ability to listen, collaborate, and stand up for student needs. I have become more familiar with the processes and pathways for advocating on behalf of students, all of which will help me strengthen student representation.

If elected, my vision is to create an environment where students feel confident their concerns will be heard and addressed. I want everyone to feel empowered, knowing they have a strong voice in the student union, and that no challenge is too big to overcome together.

My specific goals include:

– Securing increased funding and food supports for the Food Resource Centre
– Empowering executives to secure student discounts across various businesses
– Boosting student engagement by hosting regular town halls
– Expanding seating and study space across campus
– Sustainable practices across campus, including investments in carbon neutrality
– Strengthening relationships with the administration to better represent student interests

Folks can learn about my campaign from my social media profiles and through the LUSU newsletter sent to all students on Friday. I can be found on Facebook by my name “Yamandeep Malhi” and on instagram by my username: yaman_malhi
