Hello and Aaniin, I’m Sanpreet Singh, and I am excited to be running for President of the Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU). Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of serving as your Vice President of Finance & Operations. My time in this role allowed me to work closely with students, the administration, and various stakeholders to advocate for the needs of the student body. It is this experience and the desire to continue making meaningful changes on campus that motivates me to run for President. I want to build on the progress we’ve made and take LUSU to the next level by focusing on student engagement, accessible education, and an inclusive, supportive campus environment.

In my role as Vice President of Finance & Operations, I’ve gained valuable experience working on initiatives that have had a direct impact on students. From negotiating a separate bus pass contract for better flexibility and extended transit services to advocating for improvements in campus resources and supporting the reopening of the Indigenous Student Resource Centre, my background in financial management and student advocacy has allowed me to tackle complex challenges and implement practical solutions. Additionally, working with LUSU’s leadership team to enhance services at The Outpost, expand food options, and improve quality has given me a hands-on understanding of how to lead projects and collaborate with diverse groups. These experiences have equipped me with the skills and knowledge to effectively serve as President and continue making a positive impact.

As President, my vision is to foster a more inclusive, supportive, and dynamic environment for all students at Lakehead University. I aim to create a campus where every student feels heard, valued, and supported, with resources and opportunities that enhance their academic, personal, and professional growth.

 

Specific goals I will work towards include:

• Improved Transit Services: Continue advocating for better transit routes and an optional bus pass to ensure students have reliable and affordable transportation.
• Expanded Co-op Opportunities: Partner with the administration to expand career-focused programs and increase co-op opportunities, providing students with valuable work experience.
• Scholarship Expansion: Increase scholarship opportunities to ease financial burdens for students, ensuring that more individuals have access to higher education.
• Campus Infrastructure Upgrades: Advocate for improved classroom and student space facilities to create a more comfortable and functional learning environment.
• Enhanced Mental Health Services: Increase the number of BIPOC and gender-diverse counselors to ensure mental health services are more inclusive and accessible to all students.
• Boosting Student Engagement: Create open forums for students to voice concerns and ensure accountability in student fees and decision-making processes.
• Stronger Campus Safety: Advocate for better lighting, increased security, and awareness programs to ensure a safe campus for all students.
• Affordable Education: Continue pushing for lower tuition fees and advocating for OSAP grants rather than loans to ensure education remains accessible for everyone.
  I am committed to listening to students, taking action, and fighting for the betterment of our university community. If elected, I will work diligently to bring these goals to life and create an environment that supports every student’s success.
