Meet Sana Sharif

My name is Sana Sharif, and I am currently a PhD student in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Lakehead University. My research focuses on semantic communication, resource optimization, and next-generation wireless networks for 6G and beyond. Alongside my academic work, I am actively involved in student leadership and professional organizations. I currently serve as the vice president of the Lakehead University Graduate Students’ Association (LUGSA) and as a trustee for CUPE 3905. I am also the Chair of the IEEE Student Branch at the Lakehead University Barrie Hub, where I organize technical workshops, industry events, and networking opportunities for students.

My motivation for running for this position comes from my passion for student engagement, leadership, and community building. Through my roles in IEEE, LUGSA, and CUPE, I have seen how strong representation, accessible opportunities, and supportive communities can positively impact students’ academic and professional journeys. These experiences have encouraged me to take on greater responsibility and work at a broader level to support students across different branches and institutions

Alongside my academic work, I have taken on several leadership and service roles. I currently serve as the vice president of the Lakehead University Graduate Students’ Association (LUGSA) and as a trustee for CUPE 3905, where I represent student interests, support advocacy initiatives, and contribute to decision-making processes that affect the graduate student community. These roles have strengthened my skills in communication, teamwork, governance, and conflict resolution.

Within IEEE, I serve as the chair of the Lakehead University IEEE Student Branch. In this role, I have helped establish and grow the branch, organized technical workshops, industry engagement events, and student-focused activities, and collaborated with professionals and faculty to create meaningful opportunities for members. I have also participated in IEEE congresses, competitions, and regional events, which have given me a broader understanding of student needs and the importance of strong interbranch collaboration.

Through these academic, professional, and leadership experiences, I have developed organizational, communication, and strategic planning skills that prepare me well for this role. I understand the challenges students face, especially in new or smaller branches, and I am committed to building inclusive, supportive, and active communities that help students succeed both technically and professionally.

My vision for the student body is to build a connected, inclusive, and opportunity-rich community where every student, regardless of branch size, location, or background, has access to technical resources, professional development, and meaningful leadership experiences. I want students to feel that IEEE is not just an organization they join, but a platform that actively supports their growth, innovation, and career readiness.

If elected, I will focus on three key goals. First, I aim to strengthen collaboration between student branches by encouraging joint events, knowledge-sharing sessions, and regional initiatives. Many branches operate in isolation, and by creating stronger communication channels, we can help students learn from each other and expand their networks.

Second, I want to increase access to technical and professional development opportunities. This includes organizing workshops, industry talks, mentorship programs, and competitions that help students build practical skills and connect with professionals. I will work to ensure that these opportunities reach students in smaller or emerging branches as well.

Third, I want to promote inclusive growth and representation across the region. I plan to actively represent the Barrie STEM Hub, which is expected to begin physical operations in Barrie in Fall 2026. This hub will serve as an important center for student engagement, innovation, and collaboration, and I want to ensure it is strongly connected with IEEE activities and regional student initiatives.

Overall, my goal is to create a supportive and dynamic student environment where members feel empowered, connected, and prepared for their future careers.

As part of my campaign, I will also participate in information sessions, branch visits, and virtual meet-and-greets so students across the campuses can learn about my vision and ask questions. My goal is to keep the campaign transparent, accessible, and focused on the needs of the student community.
