Meet Peter Onwubuya

My name is Peter Onwubuya. I am currently a third-year nursing student at Lakehead University, and my biggest motivation for doing this was to be an inspiration not just to my fellow nursing folks, but to at least try and get involved with the school in general. I want to be part of hearing and helping the needs of the students, fighting for them, giving them that sense of being heard by one of their own, and I’m positive I have to start from somewhere, which is why I have chosen to join the LUSU Board of Directors.
As a third-year nursing student, I have been able to work alongside other medical professionals, making decisions concerning the plan of care for patients, and the experience has created an urge in me to do more this time, not just for patients but for everyone. The decisions made for the patients are not just made out of the blue; they are made with the collaborative effort of both patients and family, and I believe that is what the students of Lakehead University are seeking. They need someone who can collaborate with them, someone who can take every one of their concerns into account and come up with the best possible decision and solution. With my experience and student nurse training to be a professional, this isn’t new to me, which is why I’m willing to take up this role.
Firstly, my main goal is to make sure students are being heard. Trust me, I’m a nursing student, and sometimes I feel it’s another reason why I’m applying for this role.
My vision is join hands with the other executive members to create a platform for students to share their thoughts on certain matters or challenges that may arise during their stay in school, and also provide a collaborative space where we involve students more in the decision-making process. Students are basically the body of this school, and I am here to serve them.
