Meet Mirabel Mordi

Hii Colleagues!
My name is Mirabel Mordi, and I am a third-year Nursing student at Lakehead University. I am deeply passionate about listening to others and supporting them in any way I can. I truly believe that taking the time to hear people out and help them navigate their concerns gives life purpose and meaning.
I genuinely enjoy connecting with others, and I thrive on the excitement of meeting new people and engaging in meaningful conversations and building relationships grounded in respect and understanding. Creating spaces where individuals feel valued, respected, heard and supported is something that comes naturally to me.
With that in mind, I am proud to be running for a position on the Board of Directors, where I hope to serve, advocate, and represent our student body with integrity and dedication 🙂
I am an ambitious, driven, and principled young Lady with a deep commitment to advocacy and equitable representation. I am especially passionate about creating spaces where individuals feel genuinely heard, valued, and supported. As an international student, I have personally experienced both the opportunities and the challenges that come with navigating a new academic and cultural environment. These experiences have strengthened my resolve to advocate for fairness, inclusion, and equal access to opportunities for all students.
Integrity is the foundation of my leadership philosophy. I believe that effective governance requires transparency, accountability, and the courage to address concerns with honesty and action. My objective is to work collaboratively with the LUSU body to cultivate an environment that is inclusive, empowering, and responsive to student needs. I envision a campus culture where students feel confident voicing their concerns, secure in the knowledge that their perspectives will be respected and brought forward to the appropriate authorities to facilitate meaningful and lasting change.
I am running not simply to hold a title, but to serve with purpose, represent with integrity, and advocate with intention.
I am currently a third-year Nursing student at Lakehead University and have been an active member of AFCASA since my first year. From the outset of my academic journey, I have been intentional about immersing myself in campus life because I firmly believe that meaningful leadership begins with engagement, presence, and a genuine understanding of the community one seeks to serve.
My Nursing education has refined my ability to think critically, act ethically, and communicate with clarity and purpose. The discipline demands accountability, sound judgment, and unwavering advocacy qualities that closely mirror the responsibilities of a Board member. Through both academic and clinical experiences, I have developed the capacity to assess complex situations objectively, appreciate diverse perspectives, and make decisions grounded in fairness and collective well-being.
My involvement with AFCASA has further strengthened my leadership foundation. Contributing to initiatives that promote cultural representation, inclusivity, and student engagement has expanded my awareness of the multifaceted experiences within our student body. It has reinforced my commitment to ensuring that governance reflects not only policy, but people.
In preparation for this role, I have deliberately familiarized myself with the qualifications, expectations, and governance framework of the Board of Directors. I understand that this position extends beyond visibility it requires strategic oversight, principled decision-making, and a steadfast commitment to acting in the best interest of the entire student body. I approach this opportunity not with assumption, but with preparation and purpose.
Collectively, my academic rigor, cultural awareness, campus involvement, and intentional preparation have equipped me with the discernment, integrity, and leadership acuity necessary to contribute effectively at the governance level.
My vision for the student body is to cultivate a campus environment that is equitable, supportive, and responsive to the diverse needs of all students with particular attention to international students, who often navigate additional financial, emotional, and systemic challenges.
As an international student myself, I understand the realities of adapting to a new country, managing financial pressures, and seeking support in unfamiliar systems. My priority is to ensure that international students feel heard, represented, and meaningfully included in decision making processes.
If elected, I aim to focus on the following specific goals:
1. Advocate for Increased Financial Aid for International Students
International students contribute significantly to our university community, yet financial support options are often limited. I will advocate for expanded bursaries, scholarships, and financial relief initiatives to promote greater equity and accessibility.
2. Advocate for Expanded Mental Health Services with Reduced Wait Times
Mental health support is essential to student success. I will push for increased investment in counseling resources and strategies that reduce wait times so students can access timely and effective support when they need it most.
3. Continue Support for Student-Led Initiatives
Student-led organizations and initiatives are the heart of campus life. I will advocate for sustained and increased support for clubs, cultural groups, and student-driven programs that foster belonging, leadership, and community engagement.
4. Advocate for Increased Study Space and Extended Campus Hours
Accessible and adequate study space is critical, especially during peak academic periods. I will advocate for expanded study areas and longer operational hours to better accommodate students’ diverse schedules and academic demands.
Ultimately, my goal is to help build a campus culture where every student particularly those who may feel underrepresented feels supported, empowered, and confident that their concerns are taken seriously at the governance level.
I am committed to serving with integrity, accountability, and a genuine dedication to student advocacy.
