Meet Harshit Maann
Hello, my name is Harshit Maann. Having served on the LUSU Board of Directors last year, I’ve seen firsthand how thoughtful financial management and transparent decision-making can positively impact our campus community. My experience has shown me that every dollar and every policy decision can make a real difference—whether it’s in improving on-campus housing, enhancing student services like dining and health support, or easing financial pressures through innovative initiatives like club bursaries and OSAP reforms.
I’m motivated to run for Vice-President Operations & Finance because I believe our students deserve a leader who not only understands the complexities of managing our funds but also listens to your concerns and ideas. My goal is to ensure that every decision is made transparently, with your input, and focused on creating a supportive and affordable environment for all. Thank you for considering my candidacy; together, we can build a more inclusive, financially responsible, and student-driven LUSU.
I have developed a strong foundation in financial management and operational oversight through a combination of leadership roles, professional experience, and volunteer work. As treasurer for two student clubs, I managed budgets, organized fundraising initiatives, and ensured transparent reporting, all of which taught me the importance of clear communication and accountability in financial matters. These roles not only honed my skills in budgeting and expense management but also reinforced my commitment to serving and engaging with the student community.
Professionally, I worked as a financial analyst and junior accountant for HPG Property Development in Thunder Bay. In that position, I was responsible for forecasting financial performance, preparing detailed financial reports, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to optimize operations. This experience sharpened my analytical skills, deepened my understanding of financial principles, and taught me how to make strategic decisions under pressure—capabilities that are directly transferable to managing LUSU’s finances and operations.
In addition, my volunteer work within the community has given me valuable insights into the needs of our peers and reinforced my belief in transparent, student-driven decision-making. These diverse experiences have prepared me to take on the responsibilities of Vice-President Operations & Finance, where I am committed to ensuring that every dollar is managed wisely and every decision reflects the interests of the student body.
I envision a LUSU where every student sees the direct impact of transparent, accountable financial management that empowers our community. If elected as VP Operations & Finance, my mission is to transform our campus by making every decision with you in mind. Here’s my vision:
• Affordable On-Campus Residence
– I will advocate for quality, affordable housing options that support both academic success and overall well-being, ensuring that our living spaces truly feel like home.
• Empowered Student Clubs & Reduced Debt
– I plan to launch initiatives that enable clubs to establish bursaries and scholarships, directly easing tuition costs and reducing reliance on loans. Together, we can work towards a future where education isn’t burdened by debt.
• OSAP Reform: Grants Over Loans
– I will champion a shift in OSAP funding from loans to grants, so that financial aid lifts students up without saddling them with long-term debt.
• Transparent Financial Decision-Making
– I’m committed to holding monthly town halls, distributing regular surveys, and sending clear, detailed financial updates. Your voice will be central in every decision—because you deserve to know exactly where your money is going.
• Enhanced Student Services
– I will work to improve the quality of food in LUSU spaces and on-campus dining halls, and expand our health and wellness programs with a special focus on mental health. Every student deserves nutritious meals and robust support for their well-being.
• Academic Resource Sponsorship and Support
– I will push for LUSU to sponsor essential academic resources, including software, textbooks, and other learning tools based on need. Additionally, I plan to introduce a student-run book exchange program to make costly academic materials more accessible and affordable.
• Better Transit and Value for Money
– I will negotiate with City Transit to secure improved services and better value for the mandatory bus pass fee, ensuring that our daily commutes are efficient, reliable, and truly worth your investment.
My vision is not just about numbers and budgets—it’s about building a campus where every student feels supported, heard, and empowered to succeed. With your vote, we’ll invest in our future together, making LUSU a model of financial responsibility, student engagement, and community-driven change.
