General Interest Clubs
These clubs are based on shared interests like hobbies, culture, religion, or social causes. You don’t need to be in a specific program to join — just bring your curiosity and enthusiasm! Examples include gaming clubs, cultural associations, and some faith-based groups.
Academic Interest Clubs
Focused on a specific area of study or academic discipline, these clubs offer a space to dive deeper into your field, connect with peers, and access unique learning opportunities. Think case competitions, guest lectures, and program-specific networking.
Chapter Organizations
These are official student chapters of larger non-profit, provincial, national, or international organizations. If you’re passionate about making a global impact or getting involved with advocacy, this is the place for you.
Student Societies
Student Societies at LUSU are democratically formed by and represent peers in a specific academic program, department, or faculty. Unlike general clubs, these societies are formal academic organizations within their discipline.
Each society is led by student-elected executives and automatically ratified by LUSU each year, provided they remain active and submit up-to-date information. Societies also enjoy additional privileges such as name protection, potential access to funding through ancillary fees, and a closer connection to both the Student Union and relevant academic departments.
There are a few things you need to know before you start on your club journey:
- Clubs are for ALL Lakehead students. They cannot limit membership based on age, race, ability, social status, gender, or sexual orientation.
- Multiple clubs with the same purpose aren’t allowed – so get creative! Visit MyClubs.lusu.ca to see the entire list of active clubs.
- Clubs cannot be created to use resources to complete class projects or initiatives.
- Students can have membership in multiple clubs. However, a student may only hold a maximum of two executive positions.
Every club starts with an executive team! You’ll need at least 3 current students (including yourself) to get started: President, Treasurer, and Secretary. These club officers are the financial signing authorities for the club. You may use other titles or add more officers to round out the executive team as needed.
Here are the steps you need to take:
- Visit MyClubs.lusu.ca to create or renew your club.
- Select one of the following:
- If you’re a brand-new club, select “Start a Club” at the bottom of the page.
- Use “Renew” if you are registering a returning club.
- For new clubs, complete the required fields in the registration form. You’ll need a club name, an acronym, a description/club purpose, and public contact for your club. Typically, your public contact is also your club’s president, but it may be someone else. We recommend creating a club email address using a free service like Gmail that can act as a consistent contact and place to store information from one executive team to the next.
- Once you submit your application, your club president will receive an e-mail with information about how to proceed with the club application.
- All officers must “Register” at myclubs.lusu.ca, and acknowledge that they agree to LUSU and club rules to have an active officer account
If you are a club that was ratified during the previous year, you can file a renewal application.
Visit the LUSU Clubs website at myclubs.lusu.ca
Before you renew your club, remember to download your membership list. Renewing resets your membership list for the new term. After your renewal application has been approved, you can email previous members an invitation to rejoin for the new term.
- Register or log in to your officer account.
- Select your campus in the top right-hand corner.
- Select ”Renew a club”.
- Search the club you wish to renew.
- Complete the renewal application:
○ Fill out the contact information.
○ Review and update club information.
○ Update officers’ information (position, full name, LU email, student ID). - Confirm and submit. You will receive a confirmation email letting you know your application has been submitted and is awaiting review.
Tenured Club Status
If your club has been ratified for at least two consecutive years and is in good standing, you qualify for “tenured status”. This is the ultimate goal for your club. It means that as long as you submit a complete renewal application, you can bypass board approval and will be automatically ratified and ready to run events.
The next step in the process is to get your club ratified by LUSU’s board of directors. After you submit your application all club officers will receive a confirmation email letting you know your application has been submitted.
To move to the next stage, “open for membership applications”, you must complete and submit the
following:
- All officers must accept their officer positions and agree to LUSU and club rules
- Submit your club constitution (one can be downloaded from your club officer portal)
- Constitution Uploaded
Once your application has been reviewed and approved by LUSU, you will be able to start accepting new members.
You must reach 10 club members to be ratified.
Your club must be renewed every year.
LUSU Club Kickstart
If you reach at least 20 members and your club is eligible to receive funding, you will automatically receive up to $200 in initial club funding for the year.
LUSU Funding Request
Complete our training and submit a funding request application to our Finance and Operations Committee.
Fundraising
Organize events or activities to raise funds for your club.
Sponsorship
Seek sponsorship opportunities with external businesses and organizations through letters and canvassing.
Donations & Distinction
When a vacancy occurs in one of the key positions, it must be filled with a current* student before the club can move forward accessing services.
Club executives are not authorized or permitted to sign an agreement in Lakehead University or LUSU’s name without permission.
Club executives acknowledge they are not to undertake in unsanctioned alcohol related activities (pub crawls) and activities not approved by LUSU.
